Flag Football

Come be a part of a fun program that provides young players an opportunity to engage in this continuous action sport while learning lessons in teamwork. Launched in 1996, the NFL Flag Football program is designed to educate young people about football while emphasizing participation and sportsmanship. Players learn skills and lessons that help them succeed both on and off the field.

GAMES WILL BE PLAYED MID-APRIL THROUGH MID-JUNE. A schedule will be provided after registration closes on March 30th.

Volunteers are needed to coach or help as an assistant coach. Please indicate your interest at the time of registration or contact the Recreation Department for more information.

****NEW FOR SPRING 2012 - The Recreation Department is accepting registrations for a new ADULT co-ed flag football league program for players aged 18 and older. Games will be played on Saturday mornings in Freedom Park. Players must register individually, but are able to specify a team. If enough players register to form a league, more information will be sent out in late March.

General Information
  • All games are played on Saturdays, beginning with 30 minutes of practice followed by a 40 minute game.
  • Some coaches choose to have a mid-week practice; however these practices are not mandatory and are limited to 1x per week. Playing time will not be determined by attendance at a mid-week practice.
  • The game schedule will be determined once registration is closed.
  • We expect games to begin mid-April and end mid-June.
  • Game times will be at 12:00 pm, 1:00 pm, 2:00 pm & 3:00 pm (if necessary).
  • Younger age divisions play at the earlier times.
  • All games are played at Freedom Park located at 86 Union Street @ Jones Road in Medford.
Player Eligibility
  • Girls and boys ages 5 through 13 are eligible to play. (Note: Players that are 14 and in the 8th grade may register. Please create an account and then contact our office so we can override the age requirement.)
  • Both residents and non-residents of Medford Township are eligible to play.
  • No previous football experience is required. Each child will receive equal playing time regardless of experience.
Developmental Division
  • In the developmental division the focus is on skills and drills. Some scrimmage games may take place, depending on the readiness of the participants.
  • Children ages 5 and 6 years old will play in this division.
  • Players that are 7 years old during the spring season may play in the developmental division or they may opt to play in the regular division.
Age Divisions
  • Players are placed on teams according to their current grade in school.
  • Divisions will fluctuate from season to season depending on the number of registrations.
  • In the fall season there were 3 divisions: A = 1-3 grade, B = 4-5 grade, C - 6-8 grade.
  • Depending on the registrations received, there can be some overlap of ages and grades.
  • The league tries to keep teams to a maximum of 10 players to ensure quality playing time for everyone.
  • An official NFL Flag Football reversible jersey and a flag belt will be provided to each player as part of their registration.
  • Mouth guards are mandatory and will be checked before each game.
  • Cleats are not required but are strongly suggested. No metal spikes are allowed.
  • Many players wear shorts or sweat pants.
  • Wide receiver gloves are allowed but are not required.
  • Follow the link below for a jersey sizing chart.
Special Requests
  • We realize playing on the same team with friends can increase the fun, so we do our best to honor most requests. However, requests that interfere with age divisions or those that impede the league's ability to create parity among teams cannot be accommodated. Also, requests made after teams have been assigned will not be considered.
  • If you request to coach with a specific person, we will make every effort to assign you to the same team. However, there will only be two coaches per team.
